New Signal along MD 103 at Brampton Parkway/New Cut Road Intersection to be Funded by Howard County; Signal to be Operational by Spring 2010

(July 23, 2009) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) and Howard County Department of Public Works will install a new traffic signal at the MD 103 (Montgomery Road) intersection with New Cut Road spring 2010, weather permitting.  The new traffic signal will improve safety and traffic operations at the MD 103 intersection at Brampton Parkway/New Cut Road intersection.   More than 28,000 vehicles travel along this section of MD 103 each day.

SHA identified the need for the new traffic signal earlier this year following the realignment of New Cut Road adjacent to Brampton Parkway, creating a four leg intersection.  With the additional traffic and new turning movements, a new traffic signal will enhance safety at the intersection.

“SHA is pleased to move forward with the installation of a traffic signal to enhance safety at this intersection,” said David Coyne, SHA District 7 Engineer for Howard County.  “We thank Howard County for funding this project, which will improve safety for Howard County motorists traveling along MD 103.”

SHA and Howard County worked closely on this project and in spirit of partnership are pursuing this project as a joint venture.  The intersection improvement project will be funded by Howard County with SHA designing and constructing the new traffic signal.

“This is how good government works.  Residents brought this traffic concern to our attention, we asked SHA to reevaluate the intersection and traffic flow; and based on results, improvements will be made,” said Ken Ulman, Howard County Executive.  “This is a win-win project in that it improves safety and traffic flow for motorists.”

The new traffic signal, estimated to cost between $150,000 and $200,000, is anticipated to be operational by spring 2010 and will include pedestrian safety enhancements with automated pedestrian system technology.  Those who have questions about traffic operations along MD 103, or other State numbered routes in Howard County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.

During the next several months, there could be more than 350 work zones.  Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups.
