Project Includes New Turn Lanes, Signal Warning Beacon

(March 21, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is performing on-site preparations this week for the upcoming $4 million project to improve safety and intersection operations on MD 140 (Taneytown Pike) at Mayberry Road in Carroll County. Construction for the project is expected to begin by the end of March, with completion in summer 2023.

Project improvements include:

  • widening eastbound and westbound MD 140 to extend left-turn lanes,
  • constructing new deceleration/right-turn lanes in both directions,
  • enhancing the shoulders for continuous bicycle access,
  • installing a flashing beacon prior to the intersection to alert motorists about the upcoming traffic signal, and
  • improving area drainage.

“Maintaining our highway system in a state of good repair for our customers is a high priority,” said SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “Through these improvements, MDOT SHA is enhancing our system for all users of this busy roadway.”

Traffic on MD 140 will be maintained in both directions during construction. The section of Mayberry Road between MD 140 and Old Taneytown Road, on the southern end of the intersection, will close for approximately two weeks this summer when Carroll County Public Schools are out of session. The temporary closure will help expedite the roadway widening.

During the closure on Mayberry Road, motorists will be detoured using Tyrone Road and Old Taneytown Road. MDOT SHA will use portable message signs to alert motorists of the closure. Learn more about this project by clicking HERE.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
