Work Includes Repairing Potholes, Installing Additional Deck Support; Two-Way Traffic Will be Maintained, But Motorists Advised to Use Alternate Routes if Possible During Construction

(February 28, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin work Monday, March 7, on a project to improve the roadway surface on both directions of the US 340 bridge over Catoctin Creek near Jefferson in Frederick County. The project will repair potholes, install planking braces to strengthen the bridge deck, patch concrete and add a new roadway surface on the bridge to improve safety. The project is expected to complete in April.

The project was initially scheduled to begin Wednesday, March 2.

Starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, crews will close the right lane of eastbound US 340 past the MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) exit to install new planking braces. The lane closure will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and the planking work is expected to take approximately one week to complete. Crews will then work daily during daytime and overnight hours to make necessary concrete and surface repairs.

MDOT SHA will maintain two-way traffic on the bridge with at least one travel open in each direction. However, motorists are advised to take an alternate route during the project to avoid travel delays if possible. MDOT SHA will use electronic boards, cones, barrels and signs to alert motorists about the lane closures and guide them through the work zone.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile device for roadside assistance.
