Overnight Work to Prepare for an Upcoming Traffic Lane Shift
(December 16, 2021) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will move concrete traffic barriers on southbound MD 32 (Patuxent Freeway) in Howard County during overnight work scheduled this Sunday, December 19, 2021.
Starting at 9 p.m., crews will use a flagging operation and single lane closure to relocate concrete barriers on MD 32 between Linden Church Road and the MDOT SHA Dayton Shop. The concrete traffic barriers are being moved to enhance motorist and work zone safety as crews prepare for an upcoming traffic shift. The overnight operation is scheduled to end by 5 a.m. the following day.
Then on Tuesday, December 21, MDOT SHA will move traffic on that stretch of southbound MD 32 from the existing travel lane to the newly constructed roadway. At the same time, northbound MD 32 traffic will move from the current lane to the existing southbound lane. The one-mile traffic shift will be done during daytime work hours and not require a road closure.
The traffic switch will enable crews to work on stormwater improvements on the shoulder.
The work is part of the $127 million MD 32 Phase II widening project that began in 2019 and is expected to be complete in summer 2022. The project will construct an additional travel lane in both directions of MD 32 between Linden Church Road and the I-70 ramps.
