​Project Improves Access With Wider Roadway, Sidewalks, New Turn Lanes

(November 3, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) announces the completion of a $4.7 million project to improve safety and operations on MD 32 (Sykesville Road) at the Bennett Road/Johnsville Road intersection in the Eldersburg area of Carroll County.

“With this intersection being close to many businesses, schools and MD 26 (Liberty Road), improvements were needed to create better access for pedestrians and safer turning movements for motorists,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “This project is another example of MDOT SHA’s commitment to the safety of all of our customers.”

MDOT SHA’s contractor, M.T. Laney Company Inc., started construction on this project in summer 2020. The project included:

• Construction of a new 350-foot left turn lane on northbound MD 32 to Johnsville Road.
• Construction of a new 395-foot left turn lane on southbound MD 32 to Bennett Road.
• Installation of new sidewalks, curb and gutter.
• Improvements to area drainage.
• Installation of new traffic signals with turn arrows.
• Resurfacing.
