Flooding Damaged Roadway; Section of MD 355 Closed Through Weekend

(September 23, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is making emergency repairs to MD 355 (Urbana Pike) at Bennett Creek near Urbana in Frederick County. Today’s flooding closed the section of the roadway between Big Woods Road/Dr. Perry Road and Urbana High School, 3471 Campus Drive, Ijamsville. The flooding also damaged the guardrail and embankment.

MDOT SHA expects repairs at this location to continue through the weekend with MD 355 opening to traffic on Monday, September 27.

The damage occurred on a temporary roadway that opened last year as part of an MDOT SHA project to replace a deficient bridge over Bennett Creek.

The detour route is the following:

  • Traffic on northbound MD 355 will be directed to use southbound MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) to northbound I-270 and then take eastbound MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) to access MD 355.
  • Traffic on southbound MD 355 will be directed to use westbound MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) to southbound I-270 and then take northbound MD 109 to access MD 355.

MDOT SHA’s Frederick Shop is using electronic signs, cones and barrels to alert motorists about the emergency work, road closure and detour.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes.  Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists can dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
