(April 6, 2021) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will resume construction of the MD 39 (Hutton Road) bridge over the Youghiogheny River near Crellin, Garrett County. Crews paused work in November due to winter weather. The original bridge was built in 1923 and has reached the end of its useful service life. Part of Governor Larry
Hogan’s 2015 Investments in Highways and Bridges, the $10 million project is being completed in two stages. Stage one included sewer line relocation, drainage structure construction and a stormwater management facility.
Stage Two began in 2020 and includes a new 114-foot single-span bridge across the river, wider shoulders, 1,300 feet of new roadway and a new guardrail traffic barrier. The bridge will be nearly two feet higher than the previous bridge. The project also includes bicycle and pedestrian improvements where appropriate, as well as a kayakers’ parking lot.
Traffic impacts will be minimal throughout, with occasional flagging operations in place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
MDOT SHA’s contractor for this project is Charles J. Merlo, of Mineral Point, PA. The project is anticipated to be complete in late 2021.
MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits and other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in work zones!
