Work Will Occur over the Next Three Weeks as Part of the Arena Drive Project in Landover; Three Lanes Will be Closed Between Midnight and 5 a.m.

(May 21, 2009) – Beginning Tuesday night, May 26, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin resurfacing two miles of northbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) between Arena Drive and just north of MD 202 (Landover Road). The repaving is part of the $26.5 million I-95/Arena Drive project in Landover. Weather permitting, work along northbound I-95/I-495 resurfacing will continue during the next three weeks.

The resurfacing work includes milling (removal) and resurfacing (new layer) the existing pavement. Other work includes removal of barrier wall along the right shoulder, removal of debris, and adding new pavement markings.

During construction motorists can expect single and double lane closures overnight between 9 p.m. and midnight Sunday through Thursday, and triple lane closures between midnight and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, leaving one lane open along northbound I-95/I-495.

To avoid any delays, motorists can use MD 193 or US 301 to the east or I-295 to the west to bypass I-95. The I-95/Arena Drive project began summer 2007 and is expected to be complete this fall, weather permitting.

Motorists should be prepared for delays and drive carefully in the work zone. Electronic message signs, drums, and arrow boards will guide motorists through the work zone. SHA reminds all drivers to Choose Safety for Life and buckle up, obey posted speed limits, think orange, and stay alert. Customers who have questions about traffic operations on I-95/I-495, MD 202 or other State numbered routes in Prince George’s County may call SHA’s District 3 Office at 301-513-7300 or toll free at 1-800-749-0737.
