​(September 18, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) today started work on a $2.7 million geometric improvement project on I-270 (Eisenhower Highway) between MD 121 (Clarksburg Road) and MD 109 (Old Hundred Road) in Montgomery County.

“The I-270 corridor is one of our busiest commuter routes in Maryland, and we are constantly making improvements to relieve congestion,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Tim Smith. “We ask motorists to please use caution when traveling through this area during construction.”

Weather permitting, the project should be complete by late fall 2021. Work includes extending the acceleration lane along I-270 southbound beginning at the existing I-270 southbound truck weigh station and extend in a southerly direction for a total distance of nearly one mile. Other improvements include roadway milling, partial and full-depth patching, asphalt work, installation of new guardrail, roadway drainage improvements, construction of stormwater management facilities, application of new pavement markings and installation of new overhead roadway lighting.

To complete all phases of work, crews are permitted to temporarily close single and multiple lanes of southbound I-270 within the project limits on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and overnight, Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. MDOT SHA’s contractor for the work is Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg. To begin the project, crews will perform erosion and sediment control, concrete barrier and guardrail.
