Existing Traffic Signal at Burntwoods Road to be Replaced with New Signal at Pfefferkorn Road Through Fall 2009

(February 29, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will activate a temporary traffic signal along MD 32 at Pfefferkorn Road in Howard County on Monday, March 3, weather permitting.

SHA will place the signal on “flash mode” Monday, March 3 after the morning rush hour. The signal will switch to full color operation on Thursday, March 6 and will be in place until fall 2009. Simultaneous to the activation of the new signal at Pfefferkorn Road, the existing signal along MD 32 at Burntwoods Road will be turned off and removed. Variable message signs will be positioned at all approaches to the intersection to alert motorists of the new traffic signal.

Motorists wanting to access MD 32 from Burntwoods Road will be shifted to Pfefferkorn Road via Ten Oaks Road. Motorists will then travel along Ten Oaks Road through a new roundabout to Pfefferkorn Road to access MD 32. This new traffic pattern will direct and distribute traffic on the side roads in the area to the new signal at Pfefferkorn Road, which will improve safety as the overall project continues through fall 2009.

SHA encourages motorists to stay alert for the new signal along MD 32. The traffic pattern change is part of the $27 million MD 32/Burntwoods Road interchange improvement project, scheduled for completion in fall 2009. Citizens who have questions about traffic operations on MD 32 or other State numbered routes in Howard County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office toll free at 1-800-635-5119.
