(May 29, 2020) –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will be repairing and resurfacing more than 18 miles of roadway across Carroll, Frederick and Howard counties. The work started this week and will continue through the summer with daytime hours. Each project will take one to two weeks to complete. The locations are:

Carroll County

  • 2.7 miles of MD 852G (Old Manchester Road) between MD 27 (Manchester Road) and second intersection at MD 27.

Frederick County

  • 8.5 miles of MD 17 (Wolfsville Road) between the Washington/Frederick County line and Harmony Road.
  • 1.71 miles of MD 491 (Raven Rock Road) between the Washington/Frederick County line (south of Wise Road) and Fort Ritchie Road.

Howard County

  • 5.5 miles of MD 94 (Woodbine Road) between the Montgomery/Howard County line (near Annapolis Rock Road) and MD 144 (Frederick Road).

MDOT SHA’s District 7 office is using the Chip Seal process which is a cost-efficient maintenance treatment to extend the life of the roadway for an additional five to seven years and improve the road’s skid and water resistance. Chip Seal consists of spraying liquid asphalt emulsion onto the road, covering the road surface with fine stone, removing any loose stone after the application and fog sealing the road to embed and permanently seal the stone.

The projects will require single lane closures with a flagging operation during daytime work hours. MDOT SHA’s contractor, Russell Standard of Fayetteville, PA, will use electronic message boards, signs and cones to alert motorists ahead of the work zone.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
