Concrete Pavement Patching Requires Weekend-Long Single-Lane Closure in Each Direction; Motorists Urged to Add Extra Weekend Commuting Time
(Sept. 4, 2019) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is preparing to repair concrete pavement on a one-mile section of
MD 140 (Baltimore Boulevard) between Sandymount Road and Bethel Road in Finksburg. Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, MDOT SHA will close one lane in each direction on MD 140 until 4 a.m. Monday. Crews will perform the same concrete repairs and close one lane in each direction also on the weekend of Sept. 13.
The weekend-long closures are necessary because crews will be patching large sections of concrete pavement, which take time to cure (strengthen) to sustain traffic. MDOT SHA will return by early October to pave and stripe the road. The entire pavement repair project will be complete late fall.
Crews will close one lane in each direction each weekend between 9 a.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday. This will leave only one lane in each direction available for weekend motorists on this one-mile section of MD 140. Drivers may not see crews on site during the lane closure. This is due to the concrete curing process.
Approximately 41,000 vehicles use MD 140 in this section daily, but traffic volumes decrease considerably on weekends.
MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our contractor. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
