(May 11, 2018) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is beginning a bridge rehabilitation project on the Tem​ple Hill Road Bridge over I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway). The $4.8 million project will be complete fall 2019.

“I am pleased our projects, which are rehabilitating or replacing deficient bridges throughout our State, are being delivered to Marylanders,” said Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) Administrator Greg Slater.

Built in 1963, the bridge is structurally sound, but the driving surface (bridge deck) has outlived its useful service life and needs rehabilitation. Other work includes repairing concrete piers and abutments, installing material to all bridge piers, which will extend the life of the bridge for decades and clean and paint steel beams. 

Starting next week, crews will be working on the bridge. Traffic on Temple Hill Road will be narrowed down to one lane in each direction for a six-month duration. Single and double lane closures are permitted on I-95/I-495 Sunday nights through Friday mornings between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. By mid-May, crews will restrict southbound Hagen Road to local traffic only and no turns will be allowed from Hagen Road onto Temple Hill Road. 

MDOT SHA’s contractor for bridge rehabilitation project is Technopref Industries, Inc. of Alexandria, VA., will use barrels, cones and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone. Approximately 158,000 vehicles use this section of the Capital Beltway each day.  With the work and lane closures scheduled overnight, motorists driving during that period should plan extra travel time.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
