Motorists Encouraged to Allow More Overnight Travel Time

(March 23, 2018) – Starting Monday evening, The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will patch shoulders on southbound I-270 between the New Design Road Bridge and MD 85 (Buckeystown Pike). The work is preparation for an upcoming lane shift as part of the MD 85/I-270 project in Frederick.

Crews will close the left lane at 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. each night. The work should be complete by Friday morning, March 30. Motorists should allow for extra overnight commuting time or use MD 355 (Urbana Pike) as an alternate route to avoid construction-related delays.

On April 2, crews will shift southbound I-270 traffic onto the newly patched shoulder to begin work on the I-270 bridge replacement, which is part of the MD 85/I-270 project. For more information on the overall $65.5 million interchange reconstruction project, click here.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
