11 Miles of MD 7 and MD 545 Targeted as Paving Season Winds Down
(November 9, 2017) – Leaves are falling, temperatures are trending downward, and overcoats are beginning to dot the landscape. While Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) shop crews are fitting plows and thinking snow, asphalt crews in Cecil County are working to squeeze another 11 miles out of the waning 2017 paving season with projects on MD 7 (Old Philadelphia Road) and MD 545 (Elkton Boulevard/Blue Ball Road).
Resurfacing will begin this week on MD 7 between US 40 (Pulaski Highway) and MD 272 (Mauldin Avenue) in North East, a five-mile stretch of two-lane road that sees almost 5,000 vehicles each day. Work includes milling, grinding, paving and restriping. MDOT SHA is asking area residents and visitors to refrain from parking on MD 7 near North East Middle School when paving crews approach that area in mid-November.
Following the MD 7 paving, crews will move to MD 545 to mill, grind, pave and stripe six miles of this two-lane road between MD 213 (Bridge Street) and Kirk Road. Nearly 5,000 vehicles travel this stretch of road each day. Weather-permitting, both projects will be completed by the end of November.
Allan Myers of Fallston is the contractor for both projects which are part of a $5.6 million multi-location areawide resurfacing contract. Last year under this contract MDOT SHA paved more than five miles of MD 282 (Cecilton-Warwick Road) from Cecilton to the Delaware state line.
While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
