(September 2, 2016) – On Tuesday, September 6, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin a$1.7 million improvement project at the MD 258 (Bay Front Road)/MD 794 (Southern Maryland Boulevard) intersection in southern Anne Arundel County.  The project will be complete spring 2017, weather permitting.

The project will enhance traffic operations and improve safety for motorists currently impacted by limited sight distance along this section of MD 258.  Other aspects of the project include:

• Lengthening westbound right turn lane and widen the shoulder;

• Replacing existing traffic barriers on MD 258;

• Adding a bicycle lane on the west side of MD 258;

• Installing a channelization island to keep turning traffic flowing in a safe direction;

• Improving intersection signage;

• Resurfacing the intersection of MD 258 and MD 794; and

• Landscaping on westbound MD 258.

Motorists should expect daytime single lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.  An average of 7,500 vehicles use MD 258 each day and 1,800 on Southern Maryland Boulevard.

SHA’s contractor, Rustler Construction, Inc. of Upper Marlboro, will use flaggers and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands. Maryland drivers can also "know before they go" by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
