Motorists Should Expect Daytime Lane Closures and Flagging Operations Along MD 161 and MD 623 through Late Fall

(August 31, 2016) – To provide a smoother ride for thousands of motorists, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will improve pavement on MD 161 (Darlington Road/Main Street) and MD 623 (Castleton Road) in the village of Darlington beginning this week.

SHA’s contractor, Gray and Son, Inc. of Timonium will patch, mill and resurface pavement on MD 161 between US 1 (Conowingo Road) and Green Spring Road, and on MD 623 between MD 161 and US 1.  There will be single lane closures with flagging operations in the work zones Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  If necessary, contractor crews may also work on Saturdays between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m., except during the Darlington Apple Festival.

Drivers should plan ahead for extra travel time in the Darlington area during daytime highway maintenance work.  Weather permitting, the $1.1 million highway maintenance project will be complete late fall.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.

Maryland drivers can know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including highway construction and maintenance work zones and lane closures.

Those who have questions about SHA maintenance projects in Harford County may call the SHA District Four Office at 410-229-2400 or send email to shadistrict4@sha.state.md.us.
