Work on MD 331, MD 307 Will Enhance Pedestrian Access, Improve Roadway Drainage and Ride Quality through Dorchester County Town

(July 19, 2016) – With its 125th anniversary just around the corner, the town of Hurlock is getting an infrastructure makeover as the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) upgrades sidewalks along MD 331 (Academy Street/South Main Street) between Mapleton Street and Thompson Street and MD 307 (Broad Street) between MD 331 and Nealson Street.  Weather permitting, the project should be complete by spring 2017.

Work includes replacing sidewalks, curb/gutter and constructing new driveway aprons and sidewalk “bump outs” to maintain a wide pedestrian path around utility poles.  The new sidewalks will comply with the latest Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

The sidewalk work is underway after completion of the Town’s water line replacement project.  Once the new sidewalks are in place, SHA will resurface MD 331 through Hurlock.  This will dramatically improve ride quality and enhance roadway drainage by eliminating low spots and directing water to the new curb/gutter system.

 

Winding 30 miles through numerous towns from Easton to Vienna, MD 331 is a key Eastern Shore commuter and agricultural trucking route.  An average of 3,700 vehicles travel MD 331 through Hurlock each day.  The Town of Hurlock was incorporated in 1892.

SHA’s sidewalk project is performed under a $4 million, multi-location area wide contract awarded to Image Asphalt of Pasadena.  Work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday-Friday.
