(August 21, 2015) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) continues to improve pedestrian access and safety in Eastern Shore communities. Work is now under way in Somerset County’s town of Crisfield to replace deteriorated sidewalks and bring pedestrian pathways up to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

SHA is upgrading all sidewalks along a 1.5 mile stretch of MD 413 (Maryland Avenue/Richardson Avenue/West Main Street) from the Crisfield City Dock to Mill Lane. Work includes removal and replacement of sidewalk, curb and gutter and installation of new ramps and detectable warning surfaces.

Motorists should expect daytime shoulder closures for most of the project with occasional left lane closures for median work. SHA expects to complete the project by spring 2016. Up to 7,800 vehicles travel MD 413 each day and the City Dock area is a popular summer tourist destination generating significant pedestrian traffic. This work is part of a $4 million multi-location “areawide” contract that SHA awarded to Image Asphalt of Pasadena to replace 180,000 square feet of sidewalk in Dorchester, Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties. Estimated cost for the Crisfield work is $1.1 million.
