Bypass to Open in Spring 2009 in the Interest of Safety

(September 12, 2008) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is continuing work for the $41 million MD 30 Relocated (Hampstead Bypass) project in Hampstead, Carroll County. The four lane bypass project, which extends approximately six miles west of existing MD 30, began construction in spring 2006. SHA anticipates completing the Hampstead Bypass in spring 2009, approximately six months later than originally planned.

SHA had considered opening the northern and southern bypass roundabouts this fall in advance of the overall bypass. It was determined that allowing traffic along portions of the project would create additional construction delays and hamper maintenance efforts along MD 30 this winter. Additionally, as a proactive safety measure, introducing new traffic movements during winter was neither ideal nor safe for the traveling public. In the interest of safety for motorists and workers, SHA will open the bypass – including all three roundabouts – next spring.

SHA thanks Carroll County residents and commuters for their patience and cooperation. Those who have questions about traffic operations along MD 30, or other State numbered routes in Carroll County, may call SHA’s District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll free at 1-800-635-5119.
