(June 11, 2015)  – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning work to add an acceleration lane on eastbound MD 140 (Baltimore Blvd.) at the Kays Mill Road intersection in Finksburg. The project will enhance traffic operations and improve safety for the 41,000 motorists who use the intersection daily. During construction this summer, SHA will close Kays Mill Road at MD 140 and detour traffic. The closure and detour are tentatively scheduled to begin Wednesday, June 24 and end before August 24, weather permitting.

The $500,000 project includes reconstructing and widening approximately 500 feet of the right shoulder of eastbound MD 140. This new accelertation lane will provide an area for drivers  turning right from Kays Mill Road to merge into traffic on MD 140. The new lane will be especially beneficial during the morning rush hour, when traffic along eastbound MD 140 is heaviest. SHA’s contractor for the project is C.J. Miller, LLC, of Hampstead.

Crews will posts detour signs directing drivers to access Kays Mill Road from MD 140 using MD 91 (Gamber Road) and Deer Park Road. Motorists needing to access MD 140 from Kays Mill Road will be directed to Deer Park Road, then to MD 91, which intersects MD 140, east of Kays Mill Road. The right shoulder of eastbound MD 140 will also be closed with a temporary concrete traffic barrier.

In addition to this project, drivers may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones. Click here for a listing of major SHA projects in Maryland. Always expect the unexpected, pay extra close attention and drive slowly through any work zone. Whether it’s a tree trimming operation or a bridge project, be aware when orange is there: Think Orange (the color of construction equipment and signs), stay alert and slow down. Everyone is at risk.
