(March 20, 2015) –The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning a $4 million resurfacing project to improve more than six miles of MD 97 (Roxbury Mills Road) between MD 144A (Frederick Road) and the Montgomery County line in Howard County.  Weather permitting; the project should be complete by mid-summer.

In addition, SHA will restripe the roadway to add a new-left turn lane on northbound MD 97 at Riggs Meadow Drive.  The new turn lane will improve safety and traffic flow through the intersection.  Approximately 15,000 vehicles use this section of MD 97 each day.

“Adding the left turn lane will improve safety for motorists traveling northbound on MD 97 and reduce traffic congestion at Riggs Meadow Drive,” said SHA District Engineer Mark Crampton.  “We appreciate motorist’s patience during construction and ask them to remain alert for workers and reduce speeds.”

SHA will begin the project the week of March 23. Motorists should expect single lane closures with flag persons along MD 97 Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and night work from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. The State’s contractor for the project is CJ Miller, LLC of Hampstead.  For more information about this project or other state highway issues in Howard County, please contact SHA’s District 7 office toll-free at 1-800-635-5119.
