Acceleration Lane to Be Constructed along MD 2/4 near Huntingtown

(October 10, 2008) – Last week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) began a $345,000 safety and intersection improvement project along MD 2/4 (Solomons Island Road) between MD 524 (Old Town Road) and Walnut Creek Road in Calvert County. SHA will construct an auxiliary/acceleration lane to improve intersection operations. Weather permitting, the project will be completed by the beginning of December.

The new lane, on the right side along southbound MD 2/4, will provide additional capacity for traffic leaving the Walnut Creek subdivision to accelerate prior to merging into southbound MD 2/4 traffic.

SHA awarded the contract to Francis O. Day of Rockville. Citizens who have questions about this project or other projects or traffic operations along State-numbered highways in Calvert, Charles, St. Mary’s or Anne Arundel Counties may call SHA’s District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603.

With safety its number one priority, the Maryland State Highway Administration is a proud partner of Choose Safety for Life, a campaign that provides one voice for drivers, motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and truckers. With 93 percent of traffic crashes occurring because someone made a wrong choice on Maryland roadways, virtually all traffic crash fatalities could be prevented if everyone practices these five key steps: B-SAFE – Buckle up, Slow down – speeding kills, Always drive sober, Focus, Everyone share the road.
