(January 2, 2013) – Beginning tomorrow, January 3, 2013, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin replacing a damaged culvert under MD 16 (Taylors Island Road) near Buttons Neck Road, which is located between Church Creek and Wolford in Dorchester County.   Weather permitting the new concrete culvert will be installed and MD 16 resurfaced by mid-February.

As part of SHA’s system preservation program, two corrugated metal pipes will be replaced with two reinforced concrete pipes.  The new concrete culvert is expected to last up to 60 years. In addition; SHA will stabilize the slope of the roadside on both sides of MD 16.

SHA will maintain traffic on both directions of MD 16 throughout the project by shifting motorists to a shoulder that will be widened.  To safely complete the project in a timely fashion, SHA will reduce the speed limit to 40 mph through the work zone. Traffic cones and barrels will be used to direct traffic through the lane shifts.  Concrete barriers will be used to surround the work zone during roadway excavation.

SHA awarded the $200,000 contract was awarded to Covington Machine and Welding, Inc., of Annapolis.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.   Safe driving. Safe work zones. For everyone!
