(December 14, 2012)  -- From Hanukkah and Christmas to Boxing Day, Kwanzaa and New Year’s Eve – December is the time for celebrations and gift giving.  Having trouble thinking of a gift idea for an uncle who has everything or a unique hostess gift that makes an impression? The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) has an idea for a gift that makes an impression and keeps on giving – the gift of safe travels!

Who wouldn’t like to find a nice road flare or ice scraper stuffed in a holiday stocking?  Great last minute gift ideas to put in vehicles year-round include:  flares/reflectors, jumper cables, a blanket, a small shovel, packaged snacks and water bottles, ice scraper, flashlight and batteries, and abrasives for traction.  Plus, what really says “I love you” this holiday season like kitty litter or ice melt?  These, in addition to a fully charged cellular phone, will help keep loved ones safe on the roads.

“Being prepared for winter weather is essential for worry-free travels,” said State Highway Administrator Melinda B. Peters.  “With last year’s mild winter, many of us have forgotten the challenges of snow and ice.  A little planning goes a long way and you can be ready by taking care of just a few simple things.  Check belts, fluids, tire pressure, hoses and battery life to keep your vehicle ready when snow finally comes.”
SHA recommends that motorists keep a full tank of gas on extremely cold days and nights and add gasoline anti-freeze to ensure fuel lines don’t freeze.  Inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s recommendations, check headlights, taillights and turn signals for proper operation so you can “see and be seen.”

“Another way to help your friends and family have a safe holiday season is to help them plan their travels before they head out – remind them to call 511 or log onto www.MD511.org to check weather and driving conditions,” added Ms. Peters.  “Most importantly, please drive safely this holiday season, buckle up and don’t drink and drive.”
