(December 11, 2012) – Beginning tonight, December 11 and each night through Thursday, December 13, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close the three right lanes of southbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway) at MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) to remove the overhead debris shield from the bridge rehabilitation project.
Weather permitting, the work will begin at 9 p.m. each night and all lanes will be open to traffic by 5 a.m. the next morning. SHA will close one right lane on southbound I-95/I-495 at 9 p.m., two right lanes at 10 p.m. and three right lanes at midnight. SHA will use cones, barrels and message signs to guide motorists through the work zone.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead for alternate routes to southbound I-95 during the temporary overnight lane closures. Motorists from points north should consider using I-97 to westbound US 50 (John Hanson Highway) to southbound I-95/I-495. Another viable alternate route for sedans (not trucks) is southbound MD 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) to southbound I-95/I-495.
As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
