(November 2, 2012) – Beginning tonight, November 2, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close two right lanes of the outer loop of I-495 (Capital Beltway) between MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) and MD 193 (University Boulevard) in Silver Spring. Weather permitting, the entire project should be complete before Thanksgiving.

Additionally, crews will close one left lane at 8 p.m., then two left lanes at 10 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4, also to remove of the top layer of concrete. All lanes will be open to traffic by 5 a.m. the next day.

The work is part of $9.1 million bridge deck rehabilitation and resurfacing project.  More than 250,000 drivers travel over the Northwest Branch Bridge daily in Montgomery County.
SHA is using electronic message boards, construction cones, barrels and arrow boards to direct motorists through the work zone. As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
