Crews will close lanes at night, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., beginning Sunday, September 30 and concluding Friday morning, October 5, weather permitting. Motorists should expect single-lane closures on both streets during those overnight hours. Steel plates will protect the concrete while it cures, which will take up to 14 hours.
Crews will remove the four existing brick crosswalks and replace them with concrete stamped and stained to look like brick.
“The work was requested by the City of Hagerstown due to deterioration of the brick sidewalks, which were installed in the late 1990s,” SHA District Engineer Anthony Crawford said. “The stamped concrete is designed to retain the look of brick while offering more durability, making this a lasting improvement to the downtown area.”
“Having safe and attractive crosswalks is important for the high-pedestrian intersections like Potomac Street and Franklin Street. We're happy to see SHA making this a priority for our residents and visitors,” said Hagerstown City Engineer Rodney Tissue.
