(September 25, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) advises motorists in Washington County that upcoming cleaning and painting work on two I-70 bridges will require flagging operations on Ashton and St. Paul Roads near Clear Spring over the next few weeks, beginning today, Tuesday, September 25. Weather permitting, work on both bridges will be complete by mid-October.

While crews clean and paint the I-70 bridges over each road, the two-lane county roads, Ashton and St. Paul roads, will be reduced to one lane with flaggers alternating traffic. Motorists should use caution when driving through the work zones and prepare for possible delays during peak hours.

Flagging will take place according to the following schedule:
• Today, Tuesday, September 25, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Ashton Road
• Wednesday, September 25, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m on St. Paul Road
• 24 hours a day beginning Thursday, September 26, through Thursday, October 11, beginning on Ashton Road for the first week, then moving to St. Paul Road, weather permitting.

The work is part of SHA’s contract with Titan Industrial Services, Inc. of Baltimore for cleaning and painting of several area bridges. The work will protect the metal on the bridges, prevent corrosion and extend the “life” of the bridges. Customers who have questions about the project may call SHA’s District 6 Office at 301-729-8400 or toll free at 1-800-760-7138.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
