(June 7, 2012) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is resurfacing the MD 190 (River Road) bridge over Cabin John Creek in Montgomery County. Weather permitting, the project should be complete late fall.

SHA will remove and replace a portion of the existing concrete deck, replace existing joint seals, install drainage troughs at bridge deck joints and place new reflective pavement markers on the bridge deck. On average, more than 21,000 vehicles cross the bridge daily. SHA’s contractor for the work is Fort Myer Construction Corporation of Washington, D.C.

Through late fall, crews will intermittently close one of the two 10-foot wide shoulders of the bridge, 24 hours a day, seven days a week to expedite the work. The bridge will remain open during all phases of construction. Traffic controls and signage will alert motorists to shifting traffic patterns on and near the bridge during the project. Vehicles will be towed if illegally parked during construction.

SHA will also close access to Carderock Springs Drive from MD 190 for the duration of the project. Motorists should plan ahead and add at least 15 minutes to their commute times during the construction.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert - look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones.  For everyone.
