(May 22, 2012) – The State Highway Administration (SHA) is temporary detouring around the MD 313 (Federalsburg Highway) Bridge over Marshyhope Creek in Federalsburg on Wednesday, May 23rd.  The bridge deck replacement project is scheduled to be completed early 2013, weather permitting.

Flagging operations will begin at 6 a.m. Wednesday to enable SHA to place a barrier wall to create a safe single-lane crossing for motorists over the bridge.  The bridge will then close to all traffic from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. while one lane of the bridge’s concrete deck is removed.  Temporary detours of MD 313 will enable SHA crews to expedite the bridge deck replacement project.

Most drivers will be able to use many alternative routes through the Town of Federalsburg in lieu of the temporary daytime detour over the MD 313 Bridge.  However, because of narrow streets within the town limits, large vehicles and tractor-trailers will need to use the 14 mile detour to the Town of Hurlock and return to Federalsburg.

Larger vehicles traveling westbound on MD 318 (Bridgeville Road) will be directed south on to the Reliance Road portion of MD 313, then continue on the Eldorado Road section of MD 313.The detour will then direct traffic westbound on MD 392 (Harrison Ferry Road) to the Town of Hurlock.  Motorists will then turn eastbound on MD 307 (Williamsburg Road) and go east on MD 307 until reaching the roundabout immediately west of Federalsburg, where they can turn either north or south on to MD 313 (Federalsburg Highway).

Additional temporary daytime-only detours are planned this summer and early fall as progress on the deck replacement project allows. Motorists will cross the two-lane Marshyhope Creek Bridge by alternating single lane access through temporary traffic signals positioned at each end of the bridge.

The temporary signals will be installed before the deck replacement work begins.  Single lane access over the bridge is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23rd.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.   Safer driving. Safer work zones. For everyone.
