(May 9, 2012) – This week, the State Highway Administration (SHA) began resurfacing several roadways in Prince George’s County to improve the ride for thousands of travelers.  Weather permitting, the nearly $11.5 million of work will be complete by mid-summer.

SHA will grind (remove the top layer of pavement), patch, and resurface the roads, as well as install new pavement markings. The project limits of the roadways to be resurfaced include:
• MD 5 (Branch Avenue) between Auth Way and MD 458 (Silver Hill Road) in Hillcrest Heights
• MD 201 (Kenilworth Avenue) between MD 450 (Annapolis Road) and Edmonston Road in Bladensburg

SHA will also grind, patch, resurface and install new pavement markings on bridge approaches and interstate ramps. Approaches and ramps to be resurfaced include various points along:
• MD 5 at MD 223 (Brandywine Avenue)
• MD 202 (Largo Road) at Collington Branch
• MD 210 (Indian Head Highway) at Piscataway Creek
• MD 214 (Central Avenue) at MD 202 and at Harry S. Truman Drive
• MD 564 (Lanham Severn Road) at 11th Street
• MD 704 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Highway) at I-95

SHA awarded the improvement projects for its Laurel Shop to American Infrastructure of Fallston and awarded the improvement projects for its Marlboro Shop Francis O. Day Co., Inc., of Rockville. Daytime and nighttime lane closures are possible on all projects. SHA will use variable message boards, temporary signs, cones, barrels and flagging operations to guide motorists through the work zones.

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
