(April 12, 2012) – This month, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is beginning nighttime lane closures and two Saturday daytime closures on US 50 (John Hanson Highway) as part of a $3.8 million safety and resurfacing project between the Washington, D.C. line and the Columbia Park Road interchange in Cheverly.

On Saturday, April 14 motorists will encounter single lane closures on eastbound US 50 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Additionally beginning Monday, April 16 nighttime eastbound and westbound single lane closures will take place Sunday through Thursday between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Motorists are advised to add extra time to their travel schedules in anticipation of delays within the two-mile work zone.  Weather permitting, the entire project is expected to be complete in late fall.

Crews will remove existing pavement, patch and resurface the road and repair existing curb and drainage.  Nearly 83,000 vehicles use this section of US 50 each day.  Resurfacing along this section of US 50 last occurred in 1995. SHA awarded the project to American Infrastructure of Fallston.

As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone.
