(Feb. 17, 2012) – Beginning Monday, Feb. 20, weather permitting, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will replace a damaged stormwater pipe under MD 450 (Defense Highway) just east of MD 424 (Davidsonville Road), between Nob Hill Drive and Hermitage Hills Drive in Anne Arundel County.  The project will improve the drainage on the road, reducing the chance for standing water or flooding hazards during storms.

The work-zone requires crews to reduce MD 450 to one lane weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., alternating traffic with a flagging operation.  On Friday, February 25 at 9 a.m., crews will resume the flagging operation and continue it through the entire weekend to install the new pipe.

Construction will continue weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along with flagging operations for one-lane traffic from Monday Feb. 27 through no later than Friday, March 2, weather-permitting.  MD 450 will remain open to traffic under a flagging operation during all work phases; however motorists should allow extra travel time.

The lane closures are needed so that construction crews can excavate a 48-inch corrugated metal pipe and replace it with a 42-inch reinforced concrete pipe.  Use of a smaller replacement pipe is possible because the concrete pipe is smooth-walled, providing approximately the same flow capabilities as the larger corrugated metal pipe.

SHA awarded the $60,000 contract to A&M Concrete of Dulles, VA.  Averages of 6,500 motorists use this portion of MD 450 each day.  As crews work to keep work zones safe, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone.
