(November 8, 2011) – The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) advises motorists that a section of US 1 (Conowingo Road) will be closed to traffic on Thursday, November 10.  Crews will resurface and repair highway damage at the intersection of US 1 and MD 222 (Rock Spring Road) caused by a fuel tanker truck accident and spill on Wednesday, October 26.

Both directions of US 1 at the bridge will be closed for the repair work. Southbound motorists on US 1 in Cecil County traveling into Harford County will follow a 22-mile detour during the daytime work.  Crews will work on site between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.  Morning commuters are advised that the detour will be in place by 7:30 a.m. Cecil County and Harford County road crews will use variable message signs, and detour signs to direct travelers along the detour route.
 

Motorists in Cecil County traveling southbound on US 1 will be directed to MD 276 (Jacob Tome Highway) to southbound on MD 275 (Perry Lawn Drive) for 2.2 miles, follow MD 222 (Bainbridge Road) southbound for 1.7 miles and then travel on westbound US 40 (Pulaski Highway) across the Hatem Memorial toll bridge into Harford County.

Motorists in Harford County traveling northbound on US 1 will be directed to MD 543 to reach northbound I-95 and US 40 eastbound.  The $19,000 project was awarded to Harmony Construction of Md., Inc., of Wilmington, DE.  SHA expects to complete resurfacing in one day; in case of inclement weather, the work and detour will take place on Monday, November 14.  

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely.  Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone.
