(October 14, 2011) – By early next summer if weather permits, motorists will cross an entirely new bridge on MD 287 (Sandtown Road) over the Choptank River in Caroline County.  The State Highway Administration (SHA) begins work on the project this week.

The existing bridge constructed in 1919, has outlived its useful life and is in need of replacement.  The new bridge and alignment is necessary to reduce flooding on the roadway.

The new MD 287 bridge will be constructed immediately adjacent to and on the downstream side of the existing bridge.  There will be no detours during construction as traffic will continue to travel on the existing bridge until the new bridge is completed.  The average daily traffic crossing the bridge is approximately 2040 vehicles per day.

SHA expects the new bridge to be completed by early summer.  Once completed, all traffic will permanently divert to the new span. In late summer and early fall 2012 the contractor will remove the existing bridge; the entire project should be complete early winter 2012.

The $3.5 million bridge replacement contract was awarded to George & Lynch, Dover, Del.  This week, crews began installing erosion and sediment controls and clearing areas to the new bridge.
