Closure of Shoulder Needed Both East and West for Repairs; Some Intermittent Single-Lane Closures Also Required
(May 3, 2023) –The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will temporarily close the shoulders on I-68 in Garrett County in both east and west directions beginning Thursday, May 4, at milepost 17.5. The closures are needed so that crews can safely repair a pipe that carries Spiker Run.
Crews will begin the project Thursday and will work 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays, weather permitting, until completed. The work is expected to continue through the summer, and during that period some intermittent single-lane closures also will be needed.
Contractor Concrete General Inc., of Gaithersburg, will perform the work. The State Highway Administration understands that shoulder and lane closures can be an inconvenience for motorists, but the work is necessary to ensure a safe and reliable transportation system.
Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes, and slow down in construction zones.
Motorists in need may dial #77 from their cell phone for assistance.
