Overnight Ramp Closures, Detours Part of Areawide Paving Program
(April 20, 2023) - The Maryland Depar8tment of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin resurfacing two I-83 (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) interchange ramps in northern Baltimore County on Sunday, April 23. The overnight work, which will include ramp closures with detours, is expected to be complete by late May, weather permitting.
The work is part of a $3.8 million State Highway Administration project to resurface3.4 miles of asphalt pavement on northbound and southbound I-83 between MD 137 (Mt. Carmel Road) and Middletown Road this spring. The project also includes resurfacing interchange ramps. Beginning Sunday evening, motorists can expect the following:
Overnight Interchange Ramp Closure and Detours
- MD 137 ramp to northbound I-83: Closed overnight as needed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning, Sunday through Thursday. A detour will take motorists southbound on I-83 to the next interchange at Belfast Road, then through the Belfast Road interchange to return to northbound I-83.
- Northbound I-83 ramp to Middletown Road: Closed overnight as needed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. A detour will direct motorists to proceed on northbound I-83 past Middletown Road to the next interchange at MD 45 (York Road), then go through the York Road interchange to southbound I-83 and return to Middletown Road.
Overnight Lane Closures
- I-83 Northbound and Southbound: Overnight single-lane closures will be implemented as needed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning, Sunday through Thursday.
The State Highway Administration understands roadwork can be an inconvenience. Motorists are asked to stay alert and patient as they pass through the work zones and temporary detour routes. Crews will use digital message boards, temporary signs and barrels to direct drivers safely through the area. Contractor C. J. Miller LLC, of Hampstead, will perform the work.
