Work Requires Overnight Lane Closures and Traffic Pattern Change; Motorists Should Plan for Extra Travel Time or Use Alternate Routes
(September 13, 2022) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) continues work tonight on the I-95/I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) interchange in the Arbutus area of Baltimore County to prepare for an upcoming bridge rehabilitation project. Installation of signs and work zone barriers, as well as a temporary traffic pattern change, are needed to prepare for the project to improve highway safety and ride quality on 10 bridges at the interchange.
Overnight single-, double- and triple-lane closures will be needed on southbound I-95 at the interchange tonight September 13 through Thursday, September 15 between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Traffic lanes on southbound I-95 will be shifted to the left and reflective barrels will be placed on the right to create a safe work zone.
Additional lane closures will take place on the following dates:
- From 7 p.m. Sunday, September 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, September 19, overnight single-, double- and triple-lane closures will occur on northbound I-95. The triple-lane closures will occur between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. During this work, MDOT SHA will shift all traffic lanes on northbound I-95.
- From 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, September 20-22, to 5 a.m. the next day, overnight single- and double-lane closures will occur on northbound I-95.
- From 8 p.m. Wednesday night, September 21 to 5 a.m. Thursday September 22, overnight ramp closure and detour of the left turn southbound I-95 ramp to eastbound I-695 (Outer Loop) will occur. Motorists going from southbound I-95 to eastbound I-695 will be detoured prior to the I-695 interchange to take the right turn ramp to Caton Avenue, proceed southbound on Caton Avenue to right turn onto southbound US 1 Alt (Washington Blvd.) to a left turn ramp onto eastbound I-695.
All work and lane closure dates are weather permitting. During the overnight triple-lane closures, motorists are encouraged to plan for extra travel time or consider alternate routes, as only one lane of I-95 will be open. Crews will use digital message boards, temporary signs and barrels to direct drivers safely through the night-time work zones.
MDOT SHA contractor Wagman Heavy Civil Inc of York, Pa., will perform the work. Customers who have questions about this work on I-95 and other projects on state-maintained roads in Baltimore County may call the MDOT SHA District 4 Office – Construction Division at 410-229-2300 or toll-free at 1-866-998-0367.
Beginning October 1, 2022, the Move Over Law in Maryland will require motorists to make a lane change or slow down when approaching any stopped, standing, or parked vehicle displaying hazard warning lights, road flares or other caution signals. The expanded law is in place to protect emergency responders and motorists who encounter a roadside emergency.
