New Turns Lanes Will Improve Safety and Unlock Congestion

(July 12, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will construct new turn lanes on MD 26 (Liberty Road) at Oakland Mills Road in Carroll County beginning next week.  Improvements include the addition of right and left turn lanes and a new traffic signal. Weather permitting, the $1.8 million project will be complete spring 2018.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Congressional Contracting, Inc., of Potomac will widen the intersection to build the new turn lanes, as well as a through lane. These improvements will significantly reduce congestion and greatly improve safety.  Crews will also install a new traffic signal at the intersection, improve drainage and resurface the roadway.

Most of the work on the project will take place behind temporary barrier wall, which will reduce construction-related delays.  Motorists can expect single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. while temporary concrete barrier is installed.  Approximately 18,000 motorists use this section of Liberty Road each day.

The e-Road Ready 2017 electronic construction brochure is now available by clicking here.  The e-brochure highlights major road construction and maintenance projects in Maryland’s 23 counties.  While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver need to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
