Motorists Can Expect Single-Lane Closures; Drivers Urged to Plan Extra Drive Time During Work Hours

(October 6, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin enhancing the bike lanes in both directions of MD 190 (River Road) between Brookside Drive to Little Falls Parkway in Bethesda, Montgomery County on  Wednesday, October 8. The work is expected to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.  The new bike lane markings are among improvements identified in the MD 190 (River Road) Corridor Safety Study conducted by SHA and released in July 2024.

Crews will install new pavement markings on MD 190 within the project limits, apply green paint to help motorists better identify the bike lanes and install flex-post delineators to enhance visibility and separation of the bike lanes. The project limits are in proximity of the Capital Crescent Trail, a highly used hiker/biker trail that connects people to life’s opportunities. Motorists can expect single-lane closures on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until work is completed. Crews will use cones and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

The State Highway Administration is Serious About Safety. Pedestrians and motorists are urged to remain alert and avoid distractions when traveling through the work zone. Motorists should obey all posted speed limits.

The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes. Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
