Road Closure in Effect for Three Years; Drivers Advised to Follow Detours

(February 12, 2025) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will perform a traffic switch and close Central Park Drive at Presidential Parkway in Upper Marlboro as part of the new bridge construction for the MD 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) at Suitland Parkway Interchange Project

Beginning the week of February 17, Central Park Drive at Presidential Parkway will be closed, and traffic will be detoured. Drivers will not be able to access MD 4 via Central Park Drive. Two-way traffic on Central Park Drive will be shifted to one side of the roadway, with one lane in both directions. The closure and detours are necessary to keep drivers safe as work to build the new bridge over MD 4 begins this coming spring.

To access MD 4 southbound, drivers will turn right on Presidential Parkway Extended, right on Machinists Place, then right on to the MD 4 Access Road. For access to northbound MD 4, drivers will turn left on Armstrong Lane, right on to the MD 4 Access Road, then left on Westphalia Road.

In addition to the closure at Central Park Drive, the following traffic patterns will be impacted:

  • Southbound Old Marlboro Pike to westbound Suitland Parkway – Drivers will continue along southbound MD 4 to make a right turn onto westbound Suitland Parkway.
  • Eastbound Suitland Parkway to Central Park Drive – Drivers will turn right onto southbound MD 4, take the exit ramp to Dower House Road, turn left onto Dower House Road, turn left onto the MD 4 Service Road, and turn right onto Machinists Place.
  • Southbound MD 4 to Central Park Drive – Drivers will continue along southbound MD 4, take the exit ramp to Dower House Road, turn left onto Dower House Road, turn left onto the MD 4 Service Road, and turn right onto Machinists Place.
  • Northbound MD 4 to Central Park Drive – Drivers will turn right onto Dower House Road, turn left onto the MD 4 Service Road, and turn right onto Machinists Place.

Electronic message boards and road signage are in place to alert drivers to the road conditions ahead. The detours will be in place for the next three years as construction progresses on the MD 4 project.

The State Highway Administration understands that roadwork can be an inconvenience, but the work is necessary to ensure a safe and reliable highway network. Drivers are asked to slow down, be patient, allow extra travel time, stay alert and move over when approaching a work zone.

The project is expected to be complete fall 2028, weather permitting. Once complete, drivers will have access to the new Suitland Parkway bridge over MD 4.
