Replacement of Century-Old Bridge Improves Safety and Traffic Flow
(October 24, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed a $4.4 million project to replace the bridge on MD 17 (Burkittsville Road) over Middle Creek near Middletown in Frederick County.
The bridge, initially constructed in 1923 and widened in 1958, was replaced with a new structure featuring two 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders on each side.
Work on the project began in summer 2023. During construction, the roadway was reduced to one lane, and temporary traffic signals were installed at each end of the bridge to safely maintain two-way travel. The signals have been removed and the new bridge is open for normal traffic operations. Crews will remain on-site into November to complete landscaping work.
Contractor Franco’s Liberty Bridge Inc. of Clinton, an MDOT-certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, performed the work. Learn more about this project

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during construction as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and changing driving patterns in the work zone. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law. Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for assistance.
