Project Near Mount Savage Improves Ride Quality and Safety
(October 3, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has completed the $4 million project to replace the MD 36 (Mount Savage Road) bridge deck over North Branch near Mount Savage in Allegany County. The original bridge was built in 1960 and was nearing the end of its service life. The new bridge deck is open to traffic.
Construction began in summer 2023 and included:
- removing and replacing the bridge deck,
- painting and cleaning existing structural steel,
- rehabilitating existing bridge abutments and wing walls,
- paving the roadway bridge approach and
- updating traffic barriers, signs and pavement markings.
State Highway Administration contractor Carl Belt Inc., of Cumberland, performed the work. Learn more about the project here.

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during construction as we work to improve Maryland’s transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused and be aware of reduced speed limits and changing driving patterns in the work zone. Slow down and move over in work zones. It’s the law.
Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
