Work to Begin This Summer; Drivers Urged to Stay Alert for Work Crews

(August 6, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning work this month to install a new traffic signal on MD 178 (Generals Highway) at Knollwood Drive in Anne Arundel County. Completion and signal activation is expected in late summer, weather permitting.

The part-time signal will operate fully during arrival and dismissal periods at nearby Rolling Knolls Elementary School; a video detection system will regulate traffic flow. During all other times, the signal will flash yellow for the MD 178 approaches and flash red for the side street entrances, heightening driver awareness at the intersection.

Crews will work during off-peak hours to install the new signal. Enhancements will include upgraded signage and new pavement markings. Contractor McClean Contracting Inc. of Glen Burnie will use a flagging operation as needed as well as temporary traffic signs, barrels and cones to guide motorists through the work zone.

The State Highway Administration appreciates customers’ patience during this necessary work to maintain and improve the transportation system. Drivers are asked to stay alert, stay focused, look for reduced speed limits as well as driving pattern changes and slow down in construction zones.

Motorists in need may dial #77 on their mobile devices for roadside assistance.
