Motorists Should Expect Possible Delays During the Work

(July 11, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a series of traffic signal upgrades on a nearly two-mile section of US 40 (Dual Highway) in Washington County starting July 16. The project is expected to be complete by August 8, weather permitting.

The department will integrate an adaptive traffic signal network within the corridor. The system operates with an adaptive signal control system, which uses enhanced detection to monitor traffic conditions in real-time and alter the timing of traffic signals. The adaptive signals will replace older traffic signal systems that are unresponsive to the constant changes in traffic flow and operate on programmed timing.

Crews will begin working at 9 a.m. and drivers should expect both possible delays and flagging operations. Visit chart.maryland.gov for real-time traffic information. The traffic signal systems to be upgraded are as follows:

  • July 16, 2024 -US 40 and Mt. Aetna Road;
  • July 23, 2024 - US 40 and Manor/Tracys Lane;
  • July 30, 2024 - US 40 and MD 64 (Cannon Avenue);
  • August 6, 2024 - US 40 and Eastern Boulevard; and
  • August 8, 2024 - US 40 and Edgewood Drive.

The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Traffic Services, Inc. of Harmans, will use electronic message boards, detour signs, barrels, and cones to guide motorists safely through the work zone.

The State Highway Administration appreciates motorists’ patience as we complete this necessary inspection and maintenance work. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways.
