Motorists should Expect Overnight Lane Closures in Both Directions of I-70 Between the Pennsylvania State line and MD 56 (Big Pool Road)

(June 6, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin a project to improve nearly 12 miles of both directions of I-70 between the Pennsylvania State line and MD 56 (Big Pool Road) beginning June 9. All work is expected to be complete by early July, weather permitting.

The project involves pavement patching various deteriorated sections on I-70 within the project limits. Crews will begin on eastbound I-70 and then return on westbound I-70. Drivers can expect single-lane closures between 8 p.m.-5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays.

The State Highway Administration’s contractor, C. William Hetzer, Inc. of Hagerstown, will use electronic message boards, signs, barrels, and cones to safely guide motorists through the work zone. Overnight travelers should allow extra driving time during the pavement improvement project.

The State Highway Administration works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving, and look for reduced speed limits as well as other traffic pattern changes.  Please drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
