Motorists can Expect Overnight Detours and Single Lane Closures
(May 15, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is beginning construction of a $10.9 million project to replace the US 522 bridge over eastbound I-70 in Hancock, Washington County. The existing bridge is safe for the traveling public but is nearing the end of its useful service life. The project is expected to be complete in 2025, weather permitting.
The project includes:
- removing and replacing the existing bridge deck and steel superstructure;
- rehabilitating the abutments and piers;
- minor paving and resurfacing on the approach roadways to the bridge and
- installing upgraded traffic barriers, signage and pavement markings.
Bridge replacement, US 522 over I-70
Installation of concrete barrier walls will necessitate nighttime closures and detours of northbound and southbound US 522.
Southbound US 522 Detour:
From eastbound I-70, motorists will head westbound on I-68 and exit at Woodmont Road (Exit 77). From Woodmont Road, motorists will return on I-68 traveling eastbound to reach southbound US 522.
Northbound US 522 Detour:
Motorists will travel eastbound I-70 and exit at MD 615 (Exit 5). From MD 615, motorists will return on I-70 in the westbound direction.
Once the barrier walls are installed and the detours are removed, motorists will be guided by drums, cones and concrete barrier walls through the work zone. Throughout the duration of the project, single-lane traffic will be maintained in each direction over the bridge. Work may require closures during off-peak nights and weekends, as necessary.
