New Speed Limit Will Improve Traffic Safety for Residents and Students
(May 7, 2019) -The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is reducing the speed limit on MD 99 (Old Frederick Road) between MD 32 and Woodstock Road in Howard County. The speed limit reduction along MD 99 will enhance safety for drivers, residents and students. MD 99 in this area, lined with nearby schools, farms, businesses and homes, will now have a speed limit posted at 40 mph.
“MDOT SHA examines roadways and makes engineering adjustments as needed to enhance safety. Along MD 99 where there are school bus stops, nearby school zones and a mix of residential and commuter traffic, reducing the speed limit enhances safety for everyone,” said MDOT SHA Administrator Greg Slater.
Last year, MDOT SHA initiated a traffic study along MD 99 after hearing concerns from the community. After traffic engineers collected and analyzed data, including actual speeds, traffic counts and travel demand, MDOT SHA determined that lowering the speed limit from 50 mph to 40 mph would enhance safety and operations. New speed limit signs were recently installed to alert motorists of the change.
Approximately, 6,000 motorists travel this section of MD 99 every day. With this reduction, there is now a uniform speed limit of 40 mph on nearly eight miles of MD 99 between MD 32 and US 29.
In addition to the speed limit reduction, MDOT SHA upgraded the existing signs in the area of Marriotts Ridge High School with new signs that feature fluorescent yellow/green color sheeting to better alert motorists of the school zone.
