(April 3, 2019) – On Thursday, April 4, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will shift westbound MD 373 (Accokeek Road) traffic to the new alignment of Accokeek Road toward Spring Road. This is part of a $37 million project to construct a new interchange.

After the traffic shift, motorists traveling on both MD 373 and Brandywine Road will be switched onto the Spine Road Bridge for access to Branch Avenue. The final traffic switch for all the traffic movements on the new interchange will occur this summer. MDOT SHA will install a temporary traffic signal at the MD 373/Brandywine Road intersection until the new roundabout opens this summer.

Thursday’s traffic shift will occur after the morning rush hour and motorists may encounter temporary single lane closures. Crews will also activate the new traffic signal at Brandywine Road and Accokeek Road, and a temporary signal at MD 5 (Branch Avenue) and Accokeek Road.

MDOT SHA will use arrow boards, new signage, variable message signs, cones and law enforcement assistance to guide motorists through the work zone. The project is currently 75 percent complete.

Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
